Meeting Notes: Psychiatric Advanced Directives
On February 12th, Dr. Deborah Altschul spoke to NAMI Santa Fe about Psychiatric Advanced Directives for Mental Health Care. Dr. Altschul is a psychologist who is an associate professor and Director of UNM’s Division of Community Behavioral Health in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
An advance directive is a written document that expresses a persons’ wishes about what types of treatments, services and other assistance he/she wants during a personal mental health crisis. A directive provides a clear statement of medical treatment preferences and other wishes or instructions. It can also be used to give legal decision-making authority to another person until a crisis is over.
